This coming Saturday is a day that I mark on my calendar every year…for 2 reasons. As a proud Kentuckian, the first Saturday in May means the annual Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby. As an equally proud geek, it also means it’s Free Comic Book Day!
For those of you unaware of what that is, the name says it all. Participating comic stores and libraries around the world give away free comic books from a selected list to anyone that shows up on that particular day. It’s a great way to get people connected to the wonderful world of comics, or broaden the horizons of those who already enjoy them by grabbing a title that you wouldn’t normally read. It’s also a good day to find deals on older issues, collected editions, graphic novels, and other merchandise as most comic shops run sales for the increased traffic. Think of it as the Black Friday of the comic world.
So whether you’re a die hard comic geek, a former reader that has fallen out of the loop, or are just interested in getting into comics, this day is for you. Find your local comic shop and join in the fun. If you’re in my neck of the woods, head over to Crash Comics for your free comics, sales, and giveaways. And don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item for their food drive for the pantry at Paducah Cooperative Ministry! Let’s celebrate comics together!
